Maximum Speed Ahead warns that a lower speed limit is coming — the number shown is the limit about to take effect, giving you room to slow down before the zone starts.
Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing conditions ahead.
Begin slowing now so you're at or below the posted number when you pass the regulatory speed sign — that's where the limit legally begins.
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black symbols. In construction or maintenance zones they are orange instead of yellow.
The tested nuance: the limit takes legal effect at the regulatory sign, but the smart (and expected) behaviour is to reach that speed before you get there.
