Pavement Ends warns that the paved surface ahead gives way to gravel. Traction, steering feel, and stopping distance all change at the transition.
Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing conditions ahead.
Slow down before you reach the gravel, then brake and steer gently on it. Expect dust clouds behind other vehicles and loose stones thrown up — increase your following distance substantially.
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black symbols. In construction or maintenance zones they are orange instead of yellow.
Gravel questions focus on longer stopping distances and reduced control — slowing before the surface change, not on it, is the tested behaviour.
