A road ban limits the axle weight allowed on this road — commonly posted in spring ("spring road bans") when thawing ground makes Alberta's road structure easy to damage. The percentage or weight on the sign is the limit.
Regulatory signs control how you may use the road — they must be obeyed.
Heavy-vehicle drivers must reduce loads to the posted percentage of normal axle weight. Everyday drivers aren't affected but should expect heavy trucks to be rerouted during ban season.
Regulatory signs are usually white rectangles or squares with black or red markings. A few have special shapes: a red octagon means Stop and a red-and-white downward triangle means Yield. A red circle with a slash means something is prohibited.
If asked, road bans protect the road surface during thaw; they change seasonally and are legally enforceable weight limits, not suggestions.
