This regulatory sign marks a pedestrian crosswalk. Pedestrians in the crosswalk have the right-of-way, and vehicles must yield to anyone crossing or clearly waiting to cross.
Regulatory signs control how you may use the road — they must be obeyed.
Scan both sidewalks as you approach, be ready to stop, and stop for any pedestrian who has entered the crosswalk or is signalling their intent to cross. Never pass another vehicle stopped at a crosswalk — it may be stopped for someone you can't see.
Regulatory signs are usually white rectangles or squares with black or red markings. A few have special shapes: a red octagon means Stop and a red-and-white downward triangle means Yield. A red circle with a slash means something is prohibited.
The "never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk" rule is a frequent exam question, because the stopped vehicle hides the pedestrian from your view.
