Stop Ahead warns that a stop sign is coming but isn't visible yet — usually hidden by a hill, curve, or trees. You get this advance notice because braking distance at speed exceeds your sight distance.
Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing conditions ahead.
Start slowing now. Don't wait to see the stop sign itself; by the time it appears you should already be at a speed from which a smooth complete stop is easy.
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black symbols. In construction or maintenance zones they are orange instead of yellow.
Advance-warning signs (stop ahead, yield ahead, signals ahead) all test the same behaviour: begin slowing when you see the warning, not when you see the control.
