The hill sign warns of a steep downgrade ahead. Heavy vehicles can gain dangerous speed, and brakes can overheat and fade if you ride them the whole way down.
Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing conditions ahead.
Slow down before the descent and shift to a lower gear so engine braking controls your speed — including in an automatic. Leave extra room behind trucks, which descend slowly on purpose.
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black symbols. In construction or maintenance zones they are orange instead of yellow.
The exam's preferred answer for descending a steep hill is gear down and let the engine brake, not "apply the brakes continuously."
