The yield sign is a downward-pointing triangle with a red border. It means traffic on the road you are entering or crossing has the right-of-way: slow down, and stop if necessary, to let them go first.
Regulatory signs control how you may use the road — they must be obeyed.
Reduce speed as you approach, check for traffic and pedestrians, and merge or cross only when there is a safe gap. If traffic is coming, you must stop and wait — a yield sign can require a full stop.
Regulatory signs are usually white rectangles or squares with black or red markings. A few have special shapes: a red octagon means Stop and a red-and-white downward triangle means Yield. A red circle with a slash means something is prohibited.
Two classic questions: (1) yield is the only downward-triangle sign, recognizable by shape alone; (2) "Do you always have to stop at a yield sign?" — no, only when traffic or pedestrians require it.
