The stop sign is the only octagonal (eight-sided) sign on Alberta roads. It requires a complete stop — your wheels must fully stop turning — at the stop line, or if there is none, before the crosswalk or the edge of the intersection.
Regulatory signs control how you may use the road — they must be obeyed.
Come to a complete stop, look left, right, and left again, yield to traffic and pedestrians, and proceed only when the way is clear. Rolling slowly through ("a rolling stop") is illegal even if nothing is coming.
Regulatory signs are usually white rectangles or squares with black or red markings. A few have special shapes: a red octagon means Stop and a red-and-white downward triangle means Yield. A red circle with a slash means something is prohibited.
The test loves the shape question: the octagon is unique to the stop sign, so you can obey it even when it's covered in snow. Also expect questions on where exactly to stop — line first, then crosswalk, then intersection edge.
