Alberta Road Signs Cheat Sheet (2026): Shapes, Colours & PDF

Sign shape and colour tell you a sign's purpose before you even read it. Learn these patterns first and you'll recognize most of Alberta's roughly 300 official signs instantly — then memorize the handful the test loves to ask about.
Shapes and colours: the 30-second version
- Red octagon = Stop. The only octagonal sign on the road.
- Downward-pointing triangle (red and white) = Yield.
- Yellow diamond = Warning: a hazard or change in the road ahead.
- Orange diamond = Construction zone warning — same meanings as yellow, but temporary.
- White rectangle with black or red markings = Regulatory: you must obey it.
- Red circle with a slash = That action is prohibited.
- Green circle = That action is permitted.
- Green rectangle = Directions and distances.
- Blue rectangle = Services: fuel, food, hospitals, lodging.
- Fluorescent yellow-green pentagon = School zone or crossing.
The signs the Class 7 test asks about most
- Yield — you must let traffic in or approaching the intersection go first, and stop if needed.
- Two-way traffic — the divided road or one-way is ending; expect oncoming vehicles.
- Merge — traffic is entering your roadway; adjust speed to let them blend in.
- Added lane — a lane joins yours with no merge needed (this one is the classic trap: merge vs added lane).
- School zone — obey the 30 km/h limit during posted times.
- Playground zone — 30 km/h every day during the hours posted on the sign. Hours are set by each municipality: Edmonton and Calgary both run 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. year-round.
- Hidden or concealed intersection — a side road ahead is hard to see; cover your brake.
- Slippery when wet — reduce speed in rain or frost, especially on bridges.
- Railway crossing (crossbuck) — yield to trains; never race the lights.
- Dangerous goods route — trucks carrying dangerous goods must follow these routes.
Memory tricks that actually work
- Only two signs use their shape alone as the message: the Stop octagon and the Yield triangle. If you can only see a sign's outline (say, covered in snow), you can still obey it.
- Circles beat words: red slash = no, green circle = yes.
- Yellow warns, orange warns temporarily, white commands.
- If a diamond shows an arrow bending, the road bends the same way — read it like a map.
