The Class 7 knowledge test isn't limited to Alberta's two biggest cities — every registry agent in the province administers the same provincial test, so if you're in Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, or anywhere else, the process is identical to Edmonton or Calgary.
The test is the same everywhere
30 questions, 25 correct to pass, untimed, available in 25 languages, retakes once per day. Nothing about the test itself changes based on which town or city you're in — the only thing that varies locally is the registry's fee, hours, and how busy it is.
Finding a registry agent near you
Registry agents are private businesses licensed by the province, not government offices — smaller cities typically have one to a handful. Use the official "Find a Registry Agent" tool on alberta.ca to search by city or postal code and see exactly which locations offer knowledge testing.
Smaller-town advantages
- Shorter queues than a busy Edmonton or Calgary location, especially on weekday mornings.
- Often easier to walk in same-day without waiting.
- The same $17-ish fee range, though it's set by each individual registry, so it's worth calling ahead to confirm.
What to bring, no matter the city
ID proving your identity, age, and Alberta residency, parental consent if you're under 18, and the test fee. You'll do a short vision screening before the knowledge test itself.
Preparing is the same everywhere too
Wherever you're testing, the fastest way through is walking in already scoring 90%+ on practice tests — that's true whether your registry is in downtown Calgary or a small-town main street.
