Taking the Alberta Class 7 Test in Punjabi or Hindi

A lot of newcomers assume the Class 7 knowledge test only comes in English, and either struggle through it in their second language or delay booking until they feel "ready enough" in English. Neither is necessary — Alberta offers the test in 25 languages at registry agents, Punjabi and Hindi among them.
Why testing in your first language matters
The knowledge test isn't a language exam — it's checking whether you know the rules of the road. Reading questions in a language you're less confident in adds a second, unrelated challenge on top of the material itself. Road-sign names, right-of-way scenarios, and penalty thresholds are precise; a sentence that reads awkwardly in your second language can cost you marks you actually knew the answer to.
What to check before you book
- Not every registry agent offers every language on every visit — call ahead and confirm Punjabi or Hindi is available that day.
- You still need the same ID and, if you're under 18, the same parental consent as any other applicant.
- The pass mark doesn't change by language: 25 of 30 questions correct, no more than 5 wrong.
Practice in the language you'll be tested in
Studying the English handbook and then sitting the test in Punjabi or Hindi means you're translating rules in your head under pressure — a slower, riskier way to take the test. It's far more effective to prepare in the same language you'll be tested in, so the sign names and phrasing are already familiar.
