Zipper Merge Ahead tells drivers to use both lanes up to the merge point at a construction closure, then alternate one-for-one like a zipper — the method that moves queues fastest.
Warning signs alert you to hazards or changing conditions ahead.
Stay in your lane (even the closing one) until the marked merge point, then take turns merging alternately. Don't straddle lanes or block the closing lane to "punish" others — that defeats the zipper.
Warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black symbols. In construction or maintenance zones they are orange instead of yellow.
Counterintuitive but correct: using the closing lane fully and merging late at the merge point is the instructed behaviour when this sign is posted.
